Instructional Units

Information Literacy
This unit is designed to give students a set of skills that will allow them to be adept users of information. They will be exposed to processes for accessing, organizing, and evaluating information from many sources. They will also learn to apply information to presentations and demonstrations of their knowledge

Ethical Dilemmas
This unit is designed to give students an understanding of the complexities of ethics. They will learn that ”right and wrong” or “good and bad” are both relative and subjective. They will understand that people often make important decisions or take certain actions based on their beliefs or the cultural norms of their societies. They will learn that emotionally charged issues can have more than one side. They will also learn that people can be driven to drastic measures that often take thorough investigation to understand.Through the use of various media including books, newspapers, short stories, movies, and the Internet, these lessons will present and examine a number of ethical dilemmas. Both factual and fictional stories will portray various sides of current issues, many of which grip today’s teens with emotion.

Global Climate Changes
This unit is designed to provide students with an increased awareness of issues that are of concern to the entire world through the use of one major example, global warming. Students will embark on a cross-curricular journey that will lead them through a confusing and politically charged dilemma that pits entire countries against each other.

Ways of Thinking
This unit is designed to give students a clear concept of different ways of thinking by invoking the views of several of the great minds of history, from the ancient Greeks up to the modern thinkers of Western Civilization.

Self Advocacy
This unit is designed to help students take a good hard look at themselves and their plans for the future. As they work through the various lessons, they will write, create projects, and discuss their strengths and weaknesses in the context of Gardner’s “Multiple Intelligences”.  They will compare themselves with their visions of the ideal person. They will look at individual differences, and how these differences can be important in finding one’s niche in life. 
Computer Repair
This unit is designed to give students an understanding of the basic components, functions, and construction of personal computers. They will learn correct terminology, important features, how information is input, stored, and accessed. They will learn basic troubleshooting procedures using non-invasive techniques. They will learn to disassemble, replace defective parts, and reassemble the central processing unit, as well as peripherals
